GTC Workshop: Colourimetry – Art or Science?

This workshop is a camera professional’s guide to colourimetry, led by Alan Roberts and Neil Thompson, who will address the following aspects, from the scientific point of view (Alan) and at a basic practical level for those whose grasp of matrix transforms is a little rusty (Neil):

What is colourimetry?

  • How the eye and brain work together. Can you believe your eyes?
  • Why can't my camera see these colours correctly?
  • What's at fault? – My lights, camera, monitor or brain?
  • Coping with emergency services' blue lights or blue LED stage lights.
  • My camera does 2020 colour space – why do my pictures look desaturated?
  • The Matrix (without Keanu Reeves).

Neil Thompson

With three years at the BBC, followed by 18 working for Sony, Neil has the depth of knowledge to help others understand what the latest technology can do and how to get the best from it. He offers training, support and advice on broadcast, high definition and 4K television production.

Alan Roberts

Alan has worked on many projects, including standards conversion, digital video processing and surface-wave device fabrication. He worked on the Eureka95 HDTV project and from this he helped developed the film-look, using new technology to lower costs without compromising quality.
