GTC Awards 2009

The GTC Awards 2009 will be presented on Tuesday 6th October 2009 at the prestigious BFI Southbank London. As far as we know, the GTC Awards are the only Awards recognising excellence in television camerawork where the nominees are recommended only by their peers.

The categories of Award are listed below. All nominations are made by GTC members and the nominations are considered and voted for by a panel of GTC Council members.

Awards for Excellence

Please note that nominations can only be made for programmes transmitted between 1st July 2008 and 30th June 2009.

The categories for the Awards for Excellence are:

Drama
Factual
Entertainment
Multi-camera
Extreme conditions
Innovation in shooting

When nominating for any of the above Awards, please give as much detail as you can, including wherever possible the name of the cameraman. We appreciate that because of lack of credits it is sometimes difficult to identify the cameraman whose work you are nominating. These Awards are given specifically for the camerawork and not for the production as a whole. Where more than one cameraman has been involved on a production, please clearly indicate the specific episode or sequence or cameraman you are nominating. It will greatly help the Awards Committee if you can include information eg. title, transmission date, time, channel, production company, and any other details to ease the process of obtaining copies of the programmes for judging.

Television Cameraman's Award (TCA)

The TCA is awarded to an individual who, in the opinion of the Council, has furthered the cause of the GTC by fostering and improving the art and craft of the professional television cameraman over many years. Each nominator must explain in writing the reason for his or her nomination.

Seal of Approval

The Seal of Approval is awarded to a piece of equipment that has made an outstanding contribution to the art and craft of the professional television cameraman. It should have been in use for a minimum period of one year before the date of the nomination.

Fellowship of the GTC

Fellowship of the GTC, which includes free lifetime membership of the GTC, is granted to a GTC member who, in the opinion of the majority of the GTC Council, has 'served the GTC in an exceptional and exemplary manner'.

Honorary Membership of the GTC

Honorary membership of the GTC, which includes free lifetime membership of the GTC, is granted to a non-member who, in the opinion of the majority of the GTC Council, has made a 'significant contribution to television camerawork or assisted the Guild to function'.

The Mike Baldock Award

Created in memory of Mike Baldock, a Thames TV cameraman who died in 1979, this award is given to a person who is not a member of the Council of the GTC and who has, in the opinion of the majority of the GTC Council, rendered valuable service to the GTC. The nominee does not have to be a member of the GTC.

For further clarification of the rules governing all the GTC Awards categories, see Appendix B of the GTC Constitution.
