Do you have an idea for a programme but no idea how to go get it commissioned? GTC member Rishi Issar of Freerun TV is offering GTC members a discounted rate on his company's next workshop:

Pitch, Shoot and Kill:
An Introduction to Factual TV Development

Saturday 5th December 2009 at:

The South Room
The Lowry, Pier 8
Salford Quays
M50 3AZ

Times: 0945–1730

Aimed primarily at: Researchers, APs and Producers who are new to TV development, but suitable for anyone who would like to start pitching their own ideas but doesn’t know where to start.

This intensive one-day seminar is a crash course in development that will give you an overview of the development process from initial idea to commission.

Illustrated with real-life stories of how internationally successful and award-winning programmes were commissioned, the course reveals the ten steps to development success, including how to:

  • Develop the right mindset
  • Understand the commissioning landscape
  • Generate ideas from scratch
  • Turn an idea from a concept into a TV programme idea
  • Find talent
  • Write a proposal
  • Pitch
  • Manage a slate of ideas

Course Tutor:  Nicola Lees has developed hundreds of factual programmes for network and cable channels in the UK and USA, including the BBC, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel and TLC. She has written more than 370 factual television programme proposals, and has been directly involved in originating, researching, writing or pitching more than 80 commissioned programmes, including Oceans (BBC2), Moms on the Road (Travel Channel), How Not to Be Shark Bait (Discovery), Desperate Midwives (BBC3) and the BAFTA nominated Earth: Power of the Planet (BBC2/Nat Geo). Testimonials for Development and Pitching Sessions
"Nicola is so friendly, engaging and charismatic that I was spell bound throughout this session. Her natural humour and charm made the session fun, informative, participative and very relevant. I understood much more about the logic of a pitch, and she gave us helpful handouts to support what she had said." Rating – 10 out of 10

"Helpful, practical advice on pitching, including an exercise designed to tease out the essential part of your story, and some great anecdotes from her own career. She went through the process of how she came up with an idea, researched and refined it and then pitched it successfully, and showed us documentary trailers that helped illustrate the essential aspects of a good pitch (e.g. conflict, narrative arc, characters…)." Rating – 10 out of 10
