Reelshow International - site for student film-makers
Drama DoP Richard Dodd (Waterloo Road, Doc Martin, Cracker, The Royle Family, to name but a few) and partner Mary Lou Brown have launched Reelshow International, a website devoted to showing the graduation films and portfolios of students of film from all over the globe.
Richard feels that all too often "the average graduate of a film school sees his/her efforts wasted because of the lack of opportunity to show that most precious achievement, 'The Showreel'. Three years of hard work and study, now contained in a DVD or a film can, and no-one, apart from a few family members and friends, actually gets to see it."
This is where Reelshow International hopes to make a difference – student and graduate filmmakers from around the world can upload and showcase their work free on the site, which also features the latest news about festivals and competitions, as well as listings of film and TV courses organised on a regional basis. Anyone can register as a site member but you have to be a student or recent graduate to upload a film.
With 'manage your connections', blog and forum facilities the site has a 'social networking' approach and an online community feel to it.
All films uploaded to the site are automatically entered into a monthly competition.
The six films with the most hits at the end of the month are voted on by the members of Reelshow International. The winner receives a prize and free automatic entry into the annual Reelshow International Film Festival.
Reelshow International lists as its main benefits:
- Worldwide audience
- Dedicated site for film students to show their work
- Interact with students through our community...
- Great film school directory
- Events and competitions
