Bill Vinten GTC University Awards attract more entries in the second year

 
Judging has started for this year's Bill Vinten GTC University Awards. The Awards recognise excellent work from undergraduates studying film and television.
 
Eleven universities, an increase from last year which was the first time the Awards were held, have each submitted three films for the competition, including music videos, promotional films, documentaries and dramas embracing comedy, thrillers, sci–fi and even an animated film.
 
“The quality of the winning films last year was outstanding,” says Awards Organiser, Alan Duxbury. “The concepts and craft skills on show in the highest scoring films were excellent and worthy of a broadcast transmission. I’m looking forward to viewing this year's films.”
 
The Bill Vinten GTC University Trophy, designed by Bill Vinten and based on the Fulmar pedestal, will be awarded to the university with the highest combined score. The judges will be giving marks for content but more importantly, assessing the operators' aptitude and execution of shots, and specifically rewarding camerawork that enhances the content, an important skill for any cameraman. 
 
“It’s the subtle moves I look for and how these influence the viewer,” says Alan. “Can the camerawork help increase the tension in a scene? Does it direct the viewer's attention? Is the framing allowing us to see what we want to see or does it distract and frustrate us?”
 
Joining the judging panel this year is former GTC Chairman Dave Ballantyne, Graham Reed, Karen Hall and Marek Polaszewski. DoPs Mari Yamamura and Anna Carrington have agreed to judge again, as has the GTC President, Dick Hibberd.
 
There are plans to put the six top scoring films onto the website in September for GTC members to view before the results are announced in October.
