Roddy Maclean
Roddy has directed, filmed and scripted a number of broadcast documentaries for MacTv for BBC Alba in locations such as Arizona, The Faroe Islands, Holland, France, and Belgium as well as the UK. He also holds a CAA permission (PfCO) for commercial drone operations and is a member of the Drone Safe Register. His most recent work includes filming at Sotheby's London in July 2019, and a promotional video for The Scottish Book Trust for the First Minister's Gaelic Reading Awards 2019.

Roddy moved into media production in 2010. He received FilmG Vision Awards for Am Bonn (The Medal) 2010, and Saoghal Plastaig Ghordain (Gordon’s World of Plastic) 2011 and was short-leeted for Best Factual Short for Ceum Còmhla (Progressing Together) 2013.

In 2012, he was selected for a two-week radio producers training course with Dabster Productions. Roddy co-produced three one-hour programmes for Radio GoNorth whilst with them. He was also granted a four week placement at the Gaelic Department at BBC Scotland, Pacific Quay and BBC Radio nan Gàidheal in Stornoway. He has worked as a freelance researcher at BBC Radio nan Gaidheal on a number of occasions.

Roddy shot and directed a short film on adult literacy for a BBC Scotland Learning commission through ScreenHI in 2012. In March 2013, he produced a subsequent short film for BBC Scotland Learning about emigration from Harris in Victorian times.

Apart from producing short films and documentaries, he has been a regular contributor to a number of Gaelic radio and television programmes and has been a researcher/writer at BBC Radio nan Gàidheal Stornoway. He also carries out film, voice-over and sound recording work for Stòrlann, the Gaelic Resource Centre, much of it in his own recording studio.


Roddy is a former Depute Headteacher of The Nicolson Institute, Stornoway. He has held the positions of National Gaelic Development Officer for SQA, and Education Officer for Museum nan Eilean in Stornoway.


He gained a PhD from the Department of Education of The University of Glasgow in 1994 which examined second language learning in Israel, the Basque Region of Spain, Wales, and Ireland.
